Mary Bennet Quote

Photobucket

"Vanity and pride are different things, thought the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves; vanity, to what we would have other think of us."
- Mary Bennet in Jane Austen's Pride And Prejudice

Dear Mary Bennet, she can be so silly and out of touch with reality. She always has her nose in a book or buried in her music. Once in a while she comes back to the real world just in time to relate a lengthy opinion she has read somewhere. And yet we can't help but love Mary because her sisters love her!

Do you think Mary will mature in the company of her elder married sisters?
Is there any hope for her making a good match?

  1. You may want to check this out. I haven't read it, so I can't recommend it or not, but it looks interesting.

  2. I think Mary's an underrated character...certainly, she may be a little silly and very bookish, but it's just her way of avoiding becoming like Lydia or Kitty. ;) I don't think she's exactly immature, just awkward.

  3. Anonymous,
Thanks for the recommendation but after reading some of the comments on GoodReads it looks like the author of that book has changed many of the original character's personalities and generally done a poor job at continuing Mary's story. That's too bad because it is an interesting idea.

    Marian,
Thank you for your comment, I totally agree. Jane Austen says that Kitty will improve and I think Mary will also improve in the varied and refined society of her two older married sisters. Also at home in Merryton her company and Kitty's will be more sought after at balls and parties. Practice will help her awkwardness. Thanks! :)

  4. Yeah, that seems to happen a lot with spin-offs. I wanted to read a novel about Heathcliffe from WH, and the novel tells what happened while he was away for 3 years. Then, I read that he spent them with Mr. Rochester from JE!!! I was like, hmmm..ok NOT!!
