Period Film Quotes Game

The last quotes game I posted was quite popular so I decided to make another.

To Play:  For each quote guess the character(s) speaking, film it comes from and (on some) guess the missing name or word. Put your guesses in a comment and I'll respond with your total score. You may guess as many times as you wish.

Points: Each correct guess is worth one point. The total number of points to be earned if all your guesses are correct is 45 points (or 50 points if you get the bonus).

Bonus: For 5 extra points, guess which Jane Austen adaptation film set the photo above comes from.

_________________________________________________

Quote #1

Character 1: [name]? What have you done?
Character 2: I'm sorry! It just popped out!

_________________________________________________

Quote #2

Character 1: We shall execute our king instead, sir, and exalt our tailors.
Character 2: More's the pity. Then your tailors will rule the land, and no one will make the clothes. So much for [nationality] fashion, and  [nationality]  politics.

_________________________________________________

Quote #3

Character 1: You can love each other very well - from a distance.

_________________________________________________

Quote #4

Character 1: I assure you [name] there is no cause for alarm. It is merely that my congested condition rendered the taking of a breath through my nose an impossibility since at the time I was also unable to breath through my mouth.
Character 2: I am so sorry!
Character 1: The sensation, I must report, was far from unpleasant, though the bump on my head does throb rather.

_________________________________________________

Quote #5

Character 1: Now I must give you one smirk, then we can be rational again.

_________________________________________________

Quote #6

Character 1: In the past all a King had to do was look respectable in uniform and not fall off his horse. Now we must invade people's homes and ingratiate ourselves with them. This family is reduced to those lowest, basest of all creatures, we've become actors!

_________________________________________________

Quote #7

Character 1: You seem to have upset the delicate internal balance of my housekeeper.
Character 2: We're very sorry, sir, it won't happen again.
Character 3: It's our sister, sir. [name].
Character 1: The weeping girl?
Character 3: Yes, sir. She's upset.
Character 1: Hence the weeping.

_________________________________________________

Quote #8

Character 1: I must say, though, the worst of [place] is the number of plain women. I frequently observe that one pretty face would be followed by five and thirty frights.

_________________________________________________

Quote #9

Character 1: A mother's love holds fast and forever. A girl's love is like a puff of smoke - it changes with every wind.

_________________________________________________

Quote #10

Character 1: Hair is dead.
Character 2: If it's dead, why does it keep growing all the time, even after you're dead? Well, maybe not your hair. You'll probably be bald.
Character 1: Don't be daft. I'll die before I'm ever old enough to go bald.
Character 2: I hate the way you talk about dying.
Character 1: Everyone thinks I'm going to die.
Character 2: If everyone thought that about me, I still wouldn't do it.

_________________________________________________

Quote #11

Character 1: Affection is desirable. Money is absolutely indispensable!

_________________________________________________

Quote #12

Character 1: Let me see you ride a donkey over my green again, and I'll knock your bonnet off. And tread upon it!

_________________________________________________

Quote #13

Character 1: I knew you would do me good in some way. I saw it in your eyes when I first beheld you.

_________________________________________________

Quote #14

Character 1: I shall see thee, ere I die, look pale with love.
Character 2: With anger, with sickness, or with hunger, my lord. Not with love.

_________________________________________________

Quote #15

Character 1: I already have in my employ a literary man with a wooden leg.

_________________________________________________

Quote #16

Character 1: Oh my dears. Is it really true? I can't believe it. Last night he looked so well. Of course it would happen to a foreigner. It's typical.
Character 2: Don't be ridiculous.
Character 1: I'm not being ridiculous. No Englishman would dream of dying in someone else's house - especially somebody they didn't even know.

I'll post the answers next week. Happy guessing! :)

  2. Abby,
Very good job on all of your guesses, they were all correct! Your score is 35 points. :)

  3. 1. Name: Anne; character 1: Lucy Steele Char. 2: Anne Steele; movie: Sense and Sensibility 2008

    2. Uh...The Scarlet Pimpernel, perhaps? And the nationality would be French, I suppose.

    3. I recognize that one. But I can't place it right now so I'll have to come back to it.
    Don't think I'v ever heard 4...
    5. Henry Tilney, NA 2007

    6. Not sure, but I'll guess Amazing Grace since it sounds so political. :P
    Never heard 7.
    8. That would be Sir Walter Elliot, Persuasion -- and the place, Bath?

    9. Mrs. Thornton, North and South
    Don't recognize 10...
    11. I recognize it, but can't place it right now either.

    12. Ha ha! Betsey Trotwood, David Copperfield. I love that quote.

    13. Mr. Rochester, Jane Eyre (which version though? was it the newest? I think I remember being irritated that the entire quote [from the book] wasn't included! ;-) )

    14. I think that's from Much Ado About Nothing, although I haven't seen it and it's been ages ago that I read the very beginning so I can't remember the character's names.

    15. Mr. Boffin, Our Mutual Friend.
    I don't think I recognize 16 either...

    My geuss-#8-Charcter 1-Mr.Elliot from persuasion,missing word Bath.
    Thanks Miss Laurie!

Very good work on your guesses they were all correct! Your score so far is 13 points.
On #7 can you name the girl they are speaking of?
Feel free to make some wild guesses on the bonus question, maybe one of them might be right. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Ella,
Sorry this quiz is harder. I hadn't realized how hard it was compared to the last quotes quiz.
Your guess on #8 was mostly correct only who spoke the quote was a bit incorrect but very close.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Eva-Joy,
Very good guess on #5 and on the film for #8. So three points.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oh! I completely forgot to guess the characters on #2! I'd say Sir Percy and...Chauvelin? Was that the name! There are some rather odd names in that story. ha

    ReplyDelete
  13. Anne-girl,
Good guesses on quotes 2, 5, 10, and 13. On #14 you correctly guessed character 2 and the film but character 1 was incorrect. Your guess on #3 was incorrect but it does sound like something that would have been said. :)
    Thirteen points is your score!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Melody,
Correct on the characters from #2, you even spelled their names correctly! Strange names because they are [nationality]. ;)
    Up to 22 points now!

Sink me, m'dear [lady], the [quote] is pehhhhhfect!
    Sorry. Couldn't resist.

    3)
    ?

    4)
I'm going to guess Jeeves is Character 1 and Bertie Wooster is Character 2... it just sounds like a J&W scenario. So that would be from Jeeves and Wooster, the TV show.

    5)
    HENRY TILNEY!!!! Northanger Abbey (2007)

    6)
Maybe King George VI from The King's Speech (2010)?

    14)

    15)
Mr. Boffin ("The Golden Dustman") from Our Mutual Friend.

  18. #1 is Anne and Lucy from S&S.

#7 is the Professor, Susan, and Peter from LWW.

    Oooh, 14 is familiar, but I can't recall. :p

Good thing I'm not doing this for a high score... ;)

  19. Emily,
Good job on your guesses for #2, #7, #9, #10 and #16 they were all correct!
On #16 the second character was incorrect. Your guess for #3 was incorrect and your guess for #14 was also incorrect but you got the idea of the author correct. Your total score is 12 points!

    ReplyDelete
  20. #1: That's from Sense & Sensibility, Character 1 is Lucy Steele Character 2 is Anne Steele.
    The missing name is Anne.

#2:I think this is from...the Emperor's New Clothes.

#3: John Jarndice to Ada & Richard from Bleak House.

#4: Thomas and Margaret Brown from Lark Rise to Candleford.
The missing name is "Margaret" or..."My dear"

#5: Northanger Abbey! It's JJ Feild as Henry Tilney, and he's talking to Catherine.

#7: I know it's from Narnia. Character 1 is the uncle (I don't know his name), but I don't know the others.

#10: I think it might be from...Emily of New Moon? That's the only thing I can think of.

#12: Sounds so familiar. I just can't place it. I know Mrs. Elton rides a donkey somewhere, but I don't think Mr. Knightley would have said that to her.

    And that's it!

  21. Miss Dashwood,
    Good job on your guesses for quotes 1, 2 (haha!), 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 15.
Your guesses for quotes 4, 12 and 16 were incorrect. Also incorrect was #11, but you're actually not too far off, just think a bit more "true story".
On #14 you guessed the film correctly but the characters were incorrect.
Your total score is 27 points! :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Why, the crying girl is Lucy of course. That scene always makes me smile. I love Prof. Kirke.

As to the picture, it brings to mind Mansfield Park. But two harps? I think not. The couch reminds me of Emma(2009) but the set is arranged wrong(And it's not from GP's Emma). It is certainly not from either Pride and Prejudice, for the older one the colors are too warm, and for the older one the room is to spacious. I have yet to see Sense & Sensibility (the newer one) but there is no mention of a harp in the novel.

Okay,(sorry I rambled, feel free to laugh at me, I certainly did)
    my guesses are
    1) Northanger Abbey
    2)Emma (Mark Strong version)
    3)Mansfield Park

P.S. Could you tell me Which number guess is right if I got one. And laugh heartily if it is from one of the films I think it isn't from.

  23. Sarah Grace,
Good job on your guesses for #1, #4 and #9 - completely correct!
You guessed the correct nationality for #2 but would you care to guess the film or characters?
Sorry, your guess for the bonus was incorrect. Your score is 11 points!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Charity U,
Your guesses on #1 and #7 are correct. Your score is 8 points. Thanks so much for playing! :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Stephanie,
Your rambling guesses did make my smile but mostly because you were correct in your thought process! For the set your third guess was correct, I'm not sure why two harps. :)
And thanks for mentioning the name of the weeping girl, very good.
So I'm adding 6 points to your score giving you a total of 19 points!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Bea,
Good job on your guesses, you got a total of 14 points!
Unfortunately your guesses on quotes 2, 10 and 12 were incorrect.

    ReplyDelete
  27. #7: Character 2 - Peter; Character 3 - Susan; Film - Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe; Name - Lucy.
#8: Character - Mr. Elliot; Film - Persuasion; Place - Bath.
#16: Character 1 - I don't quite remember her title or name, but it is Lord Grantham's mother; Character 2 - Lady Grantham; Film - Downton Abbey

    ReplyDelete
  28. That's funny, it was my third guess because it was the one I least expected. (Although I kept going back to it.) The harps really threw me off.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Emma,
Good work on your guesses, all three were correct! Your total score is 11 points!

    ReplyDelete
  30. All right, then I'm going to guess that #11 is from Becoming Jane. Have no idea who said it though!
And since #14 is indeed Much Ado, then perhaps it's Don PEDRO and Benedict? Did I write Don John last time? I meant Don Pedro (heehee, the good brother, not the evil one).

    ReplyDelete
  31. Quote 1-Sense and Sensibility (bbc 2008), Lucy Steele, Nancy Steele, word-Nancy
Quote 2 The Scarlet Pimpernel (the best version that ever could be made), Chauvelin, Sir Percy (Anthony Andrews...swoon), words-French
    Quote 3 ?
    Quote 4 ?
Quote 5 Northanger Abbey, Henry Tilney
    Quote 6 ?
Quote 7 The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, the Professor, Peter (2nd), Susan (3rd), word-Lucy. I am humiliated to the grave. I could not think of this although I knew I should know it, and when it came to be I was dreadfully embarrassed that it took so long.
    Quote 8 ?
    Quote 9 ?
    Quote 10 ?
    Quote 11 ?
    Quote 12 ?
    Quote 13 ?
Quote 14 Much Ado About Nothing, Benedict, Beatrice or Beatrix
    Quote 15 ?
    Quote 16 ?
I guess it is either Mansfield Park (2008), Persuasion (either), or Emma (2008). The first two I guessed because of the harps.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Miss Dashwood,
You are correct on the film for #11, very good guess! And also correct on the two characters for #14. So I'm adding three more points to your score bringing it up to 30 points!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Livia,
Good job on your guesses, all five quotes were completely correct and on the bonus the first film you mentioned was correct! Your comments on quote #2 made me smile!

  34. #1 - Lucy and Anne Steele, BBC Sense and Sensibility. Name: Anne.
#7 - The Professor, Peter, and Susan. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Name: Lucy.
#8 - Sir Walter Elliot. Persuasion.

  36. Quote #1:

    "Anne? What have you done?"

"I'm sorry, it just popped out!"

    HAHA!! Love this quote!!
    Sense & Sensibility, BBC.

Quote #8: "I must say though, the worse of Bath is the number of plain women"... etc.
DEFINITELY a Persuasion, but I am not sure if it is the one starring Amanda Root, or Sally Hawkins, as Anne Elliot.

Quote #10: is this from the Secret Garden?

The others I really have no idea. I need to watch more period dramas!! :D

    ReplyDelete
  37. I've followed your blog somewhat unofficially, yet have never participated in your games. At least, never out loud. I shall hazard a few guesses for this one though.

I don't know about #1, though it sounds a little bit like Little Women. #2...is that Chauvelin and Sir Percy in The Scarlet Pimpernel?
I know that #4 is Thomas Brown and his wife from Lark Rise to Candleford. #7 would be the Professor, Peter, and Susan talking about Lucy in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
#9 I believe is from North and South? I don't remember the character's name, but it's the main guy's mother I think.
#10 would be the Secret Garden, Mary and Colin.

I don't know any of the others, which is driving me absolutely nuts because I know I've heard #13 before, I just can't remember where! Ugh! I'll just go out there on a limb and guess that is it from Little Dorrit, though I don't fully believe that to be correct.

And I'm afraid that I have no idea about the picture.

Thanks for posting the game! I look forward to seeing the answers!

  38. I hope it didn't come across that I was complaining.
I really enjoyed reading these quotes!
I have one more guess- #9-Charcter 1-Mrs.Thronton from North and South.
    Thanks Miss Laurie!

  39. Hi! I already left a comment with some guesses, but I finally remembered the answer to one that I couldn't remember before! #13 was from Jane Eyre! Of course!

so, I just had to add that to my list of guesses! Thanks again!

  40. Bonus Guess- I was wondering if the room was from Pemberley in the 2005 'P&P'?

    ReplyDelete
  41. hope i can guess the bonus without answering any other questions!

i reckon the scene at the top is from the 2005 pride & prejudice. when georgiana meets lizzy for the first time. (though i'm not sure about the harps!)

  42. Julia,
Good job on your guesses, they were all correct! Your score is 5 points!

  43. Tillie,
Thank you so much for following my blog and I'm so glad you decided to play this time! :)
Good job on your guesses, the only one that was incorrect was #1. Your first guess on #13 was incorrect but your second was absolutely right!
Your total score is 17 points! :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ella,
No, I understand about it being harder. I had a harder time finding quote this time round and I realized afterward that I'd chosen some that might be a bit more obscure. I'm glad you play though!
Good job on guessing #9. Your score is up to 5 points.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Jemimah & Sarah,
You both guessed the same film and scene but unfortunately that was incorrect. :(

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm sorry, can I add one more guess? I don't even know if it's right or not, but is #6 from Nicholas Nickleby? Okay, I'll stop second guessing myself on everything now! :^D

    ReplyDelete
  47. Um...."7 is in Naria The lion the witch and the wardrobe....Character 1 is The professor. Character 2 is Peter. Character 3 is Susan...And it is when Lucy runs crying into the Professor after Edmund pretends that he was just playing about Narnia.... (:

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh! I must guess again before the time is up!
    3. For some reason I keep hearing Judi Dench when I read this quote, so I'll guess Miss Matty from Cranford.
    6. Eh...I KNOW I've heard this. I'll just guess Mrs. Gibson from Wives and Daughters because it sounds like something she would say. (Although I do not think I am right.)

As for the picture, my first guess was Persuasion. But it's just random. :P

    ReplyDelete
  49. Tillie,
Sorry, but your guess on #6 was incorrect. :(

    Naomi,
Good job on your guess for #7! You get 5 points for a job well done! :)

  52. OOOH! 9 isn't Mr. Chivery! It's Mrs. Thornton from North and South! I thought it sounded a little odd coming from Mr. Chivery....

Not 100% sure about the bonus picture and I don't remember seeing it in any of the Jane Austen films I've seen, but I'm going to guess from one of the Mansfield Park movies since there are harps there...
