Jane Austen Quote Game

Jane Austen is one of the most quotable authors from classic literature but many of her most famous quotes come straight from the mouths of her delightful characters.

See how well you know Jane Austen by trying to guess which character says each quote and which book each quote comes from!

To Play: Try to guess who said each quote without looking up the answers. Leave your guesses for character and book in a comment and I'll respond with your score. Guess as many times as you wish.

Points: One point for each correctly guessed character and book. Maximum of 30 points can be earned.

Which Jane Austen characters from which books said the following quotes?

Quote #1 - “I have been a selfish being all my life, in practice, though not in principle.”

Quote #2 - "A person who can write a long letter with ease, cannot write ill."

Quote #3 - To sit in the shade on a fine day and look upon verdure is the most perfect refreshment.

Quote #4 - "It is happy for you that you possess the talent of flattering with delicacy. May I ask whether these pleasing attentions proceed from the impulse of the moment, or are the result of previous study?"

Quote #5 - "There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort."

Quote #6 - "Happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance."

Quote #7 - "What wild imaginations one forms where dear self is concerned! How sure to be mistaken!"

Quote #8 - "A large income is the best recipe for happiness I ever heard of."

Quote #9 - "...The more I know of the world, the more I am convinced that I shall never see a man whom I can really love."

Quote #10 - "...if you observe, people always live for ever when there is any annuity to be paid them."

Quote #11 - "Where so many hours have been spent in convincing myself that I am right, is there not some reason to fear I may be wrong?"

Quote #12 - "Oh! do not attack me with your watch. A watch is always too fast or too slow. I cannot be dictated to by a watch."

Quote #13 - "One man's ways may be as good as another's, but we all like our own best..."

Quote #14 - "We have all a better guide in ourselves, if we would attend to it, than any other person can be."

Quote #15 - "I should no more lay it down as a general rule that women write better letters than men, than that they sing better duets, or draw better landscapes. In every power, of which taste is the foundation, excellence is pretty fairly divided between the sexes."

Answers will be posted next week.

Have fun!

  1. Oh dear, these quotes are nearly all so familiar, and yet I can't place many of them! I'll do my best... and then I'll probably wake up at three tomorrow morning and remember them. ;)

With some of these, I may just guess the book and not the character, if that's OK.

1- Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice
    2- Northanger Abbey
    3- Mansfield Park-- Fanny, perchance?
4- Mr. Bennet, P&P (love this one)
    5- Emma, possibly Mr. Woodhouse
    6- Charlotte Lucas, P&P
7- I like this one... but can't place it!!
    8- Henry Tilney, Northanger Abbey
9- Marianne Dashwood, Sense and Sensibility
10- Fanny Dashwood, S&S (this one always makes me laugh, even though I shouldn't because Fanny is so heartless!)
11- Elizabeth Bennet, P&P? This also sounds like it might be Emmer Woodhouse herself...
12- Isabella Thorpe from Northanger Abbey? I know I've heard this one...
    13- Persuasion
    14- Fanny Price, Mansfield Park
15- This sounds like Henry Tilney from NA again. But I can't be sure.
