Period Musical Lyrics Quiz

Five extra points: Which Musical is this photo from?
Some of the most popular musicals of Broadway and film are often set in a historic era, the 1800's seems to be a particularly popular time frame. This game focuses on lyrics from some of those period set musicals.

The idea for this game came to me when I was watching for the first time a musical that seems to be a particular favorite of a lot of my blogging friends (you know who you are and it's your fault that now the tunes to "Master of the House" and others are stuck in my head! :P )

To Play: Guess the song titles and which musicals the lyrics below come from and leave your answers in a comment. If the title of the song appears in the lyrics I've replaced it with blank spaces. Guess as many times as you like and I'll respond with your score. Answers will be posted next week.

Points: To make it simple there will be one point for each correctly guessed song title and musical. Maximum score is 20 points.

Period Musical Lyrics

#1.
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of __ _____ ____

#2.
Our star is shining it's brightest light
For goodnight, my love, for goodnight.
Sweet dreams be yours, dear,
If dreams there be
Sweet dreams to carry you close to me.
I wish they may and I wish they might
Now _____, __ ____, goodnight

#3.
I'm as mild and as meek as a mouse
When I hear a command I obey.
But I know of a spot in my house
where no one can stand in my way.
__ __ __ __ __  in my own little chair

On the wings of my fancy I can fly anywhere
and the world will open its arms to me.

#4.
_____, _____,
Make me a match,
Find me a find,
catch me a catch
_____, _____,
Look through your book,
And make me a perfect match

#5.

My head's too light to try to set it down! Sleep! Sleep!
I couldn't sleep tonight.
Not for all the jewels in the crown!
_ ___ __ ___ __ ___!
_ ___ __ ___ __ ___!
And still have begged for more.
I could have spread my wings
And done a thousand things I've never done before.

God on high
Hear my prayer
In my need
You have always been there

He is young
He's afraid
Let him rest
Heaven blessed.

Than my thumb, than my thumb
Sweet _______ don't be glum
Now now now, ah ah ah, come come come

_______,  _______  tiny little thing
_______ dance,  _______  sing
_______ what's the difference if you're very small?
When your heart is full of love you're nine feet tall

#8.
_____ __ ____ ___,
Getting to feel free and easy
When I am with you,
Getting to know what to say

Haven't you noticed
Suddenly I'm bright and breezy?
Because of all the beautiful and new
Things I'm learning about you
Day by day.

#9.
No more talk of darkness
Forget these wide-eyed fears
I'm here, nothing can harm you
My words will warm and calm you

Let me be your freedom
Let daylight dry your tears
I'm here, with you, beside you
To guard you and to guide you

#10.
When I take you out, tonight, with me,
Honey, here's the way it's goin' to be:
You will set behind a team of snow white horses,
In the slickest gig you ever see!

Chicks and ducks and geese better scurry
When I take you out in the surrey,
When I take you out in the ____ ___ __ _____ __ ___!

Hopefully this quiz won't be too hard or (oh horrors!) too easy. Have fun! :)

  38. Is #7 perhaps from Guys and Dolls? Another one I haven't seen... and I don't know very many of the songs, but my dad used to sing "I Love You Bushel and a Peck" to me when I was a baby. Heehee, we do a lot of musical-theater-singing in my house...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Mary P & Jessica,
I'm not exactly sure why the "threat blocked" notice is coming up. I've gone over all elements of my blog very carefully and there doesn't seem to be any content that should cause a notice.

What type of internet browser do you use? Internet Explorer might have some trouble with it. Also it could be a conflict with your antivirus settings?

If it happens again please let me know and it would be helpful if you could give specifics about what browser you're using and what page of my blog you are trying to visit when the notice comes up. Thanks!

  43. Miss Dashwood,
No sorry, #7 isn't from Guys and Dolls but that's another fun one. My cousin was in her high school's production of Guys & Dolls so I know several of the songs fairly well and "I Love You A Bushel and a Peck" and "Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat" were on a record album my parents used to play when I was growing up so they're stuck in my memory. :)

Musical theater singing is quite popular in my house too and my dad is one of those people who is reminded of songs by just hearing a word or phrase and he'll instantly start singing (and at the dinner table too, hehe)! :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. It is just your home page when it first comes up, that the threat is blocked. And yes, I do use internet explorer. I doubt that my antivirus has a problem, since my "IT guy" husband set my computer up for me. ;-)I could ask him to take a look for me sometime and maybe that would shed some light on the problem. Oh, it has happened with one other blog I've read, too. "Newly Impassioned Soul". Odd that it was period drama type blogs both times. Haha
