What period dramas are you looking forward to watching?
Upcoming films? Films that haven't come to DVD yet? Period dramas that you just haven't seen?
I was just thinking about this subject and figured I'd throw the question out there and then mention a few period dramas that I'm looking forward to.
Period Dramas I'm Looking Forward To:
A cinema near me is playing this and I really want to go see it! The story is interesting, if sometimes gritty, but that's Thomas Hardy for you. I'm excited to see Carey Mulligan as strong heroine Bathsheba Everdeen, it is rated PG-13 though.
So I've watched some of the older series and wasn't a huge fan and I wasn't really interested in the remake but watching a few clips, my interest is piqued. Again, this period drama is on the gritty side and not the usual pretty period drama that I prefer.
Another Jane Austen in the works and I'm just so excited about it!
A film about young Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret that looks super cute!
All about an aged Sherlock Holmes who seems grumpy and rather a recluse, but he comes back for one more case!
Three new Shakespeare TV films and an all-star cast! Can't wait! :)
Whoa! So I was looking at a list of upcoming period dramas and found out that the BBC has commissioned an adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton with screenwriter Heidi Thomas (Cranford, Upstairs Downstairs, Call The Midwife) working on the script now!
Back at Christmas time I gave my dad in KY the last season of Poirot, but didn't have time to watch the five episodes before going back to NY.
I've seen this but not in quite a long time and since listening to the audiobook I've really been wanting to watch this, but alas my DVD is in another state. Soon I shall be home for the summer and my family will have to put up with watching it with me. :)
What period dramas are you looking forward to watching?
Oh wow, I always have LOADS of movies I want to see. 'A Royal Night Out' is SOOO one of them. I'm just crazy about it and I can't WAIT to watch it - especially as I'm such a Royalty fan and I love that time period. :-)

Mary Barton! Really?!! Oh yaysies! :-) Glad to hear I'm not the only one with a long to-see list (although, I can garentuee you, mine is faaar longer.)

DeleteLove and Friendship and Mr. Holmes for sure! I just saw Far from the Madding Crowd and it was ok. Michael Sheen was amazing, but other then that the old version with Nathaniel Parker was better. Also the new Poldark was awesome, which might have influenced my opinions on Far from the Madding Crowd, when one nails brooding and riding along cliff tops one tends to compare them with those that don't quite work.
ReplyDeleteGood to hear that Poldark is awesome. It is a bit odd that they put Michael Sheen in that role and an actor I'd never heard of for Gabriel, almost like Bathsheba should marry the other guy.
DeleteIt's interesting that you mention Poldark--I am planning on giving that a chance. I watched the original and read some of the books. It is a bit more gritty for sure. If the new version is more "adult" in presentation, I won't watch it--I am afraid of that. I would like to watch Wolfe Hall when I can--I teach a course in English History, and I would enjoy seeing their interpretation of Cromwell. We get home from Church on Sunday evenings sometimes a little too late to catch the beginning. I recently watched the production of Great Expectations--wow. Are they ever going to do A tale of Two Cities?

DeleteI was interested in Wolfe Hall because of the actors but was worried it was too adult, I worry about that with Poldark too. Which Great Expectations did you watch?
Not sure about A Tale Of Two Cities adaptation, I know that there's another David Copperfield in the works.
Wow, I didn't know there were so many seasons of Poirot! I've watched the first two, and most of the movies -- it's such a fun show. :-) My favorite of the movies is Death on the Nile. What's yours?

DeleteITV has adapted all of the Poirot stories and they're all good! The last season has some of my favorite stories like Dead Man's Folly which I have seen and it was good. Evil Under The Sun is another favorite of mine.
Yes, more Endeavour coming, Foyle's War has been cancelled (again). Wolf Hall was ok, not much happens, it's very atmospheric.
ReplyDeleteI'm interest in seeing most of these, especially "Love and Friendship" and "Mr. Holmes". I haven't seen "Cinderella" yet either. Everyone says it's really good. I bought the 1999 "David Copperfield" at a yard sale last year and have watched it a couple of times already.

ReplyDeleteI watched "Wolf Hall" when it aired on PBS and enjoyed it. I've read a lot of books about the Tudor period including the new biography about Thomas Cromwell by Tracy Borman.
I also enjoyed watching the 3rd season of "Mr. Selfridge."
I'm another one looking forward to seeing "Poldark." Obviously the original was on before I was born! Robin Ellis, who starred as the lead in the original series, will be in this new one as a minister. Finally, the season finale of "Downton Abbey" next year.
Loved watching Poldark!!! There were a few scenes that we skipped but you should be able to tell when they are coming up so you can just skip :) I think there was some bad words as well. That's when ClearPlay comes in handy. I just wish you could rent the DVD's instead of having to find them online or buy them :/ Anyways... Aiden Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson were fantastic! They are the perfect match in the series :)

ReplyDeleteI just finished watching Cranford last night for the first time, so now I'm greatly looking forward to seeing Return to Cranford soon. Also, I want to watch the '70s version of North and South, the version of Great Expectations that stars Ioan Gruffudd as Pip, and both the 1933 and 1949 versions of Little Women. Then there are a bunch of westerns on my to-watch-soon list too...

The BBC also made a new series about the homefront during WWII, which I'm really interested in called Home Fires.
I really liked Poldark (2015). Other reviewers that have read the books say that this version follows the books more closer than the old series of the 70s. (I've seen clips from the old series and the acting looks over dramatic.) It was beautifully shot, lovely scenery. And as for some scenes, well the other period movies whose reviews are on this blog has far worse bedroom scenes.
