Many British actors got their start by playing in period dramas and continue to pop up in period films from time to time. When an actor has been in more than one period drama I start to think of them as period drama actors.
The object of this game is to correctly identify the actors pictured below and name a few of the many period dramas they have starred in! There's ten actors this time but hopefully they should be fairly familiar to most of you! :)
To Play: Guess what each actor's name is and name as many period dramas that they have starred in as you can remember without looking up answers. I've given you hints as to which period dramas I'm thinking of by giving you a list of years they were released in (these are also films I've seen and can mostly recommend). Leave your guesses in a comment. Guess as many times as you wish. Answers will be posted next Saturday.
Scoring: 5 points each for correctly naming a period drama actor. 5 points for each period drama you name. Note: No extra points for naming more than the amount of films I've mentioned. Highest score to be earned is 330 points.
Hint: This time around period set mysteries are a big theme. Also there's a few dates that indicate an actor was in a period set TV series.

1. Is this JJ Feild? And the only two I know with him are Northanger Abbey and Nicholas Nickleby.
2. She looks familiar but I can't place it! Probably if I saw her in costume... ;)
3. Ah, David Suchet! :) Haha, the 1989-2013 one would of course be Poirot... and I remember hearing his name a on the promo for The Way We Live Now! :) Oh, and of course A Tale of Two Cities! I remember you talking about him when we watched that together. But you didn't mention that year on the list so perhaps it doesn't count. Well... I'm mentioning it anyways, haha.
4. Pam Ferris. Oh, yikes, she was in a lot. Let's see.
Pollyanna
Jane Eyre
Our Mutual Friend
Little Dorrit
Nicholas Nickleby (2001)
Haven't seen it, but I remember seeing her name on that one movie my sister said was weird, that had Jodhi May and Colin Firth... was it Henry James? The Turning of the Screw? The Taming of the Shrew? Haha... I don't remember exactly... :P
5. James somebody? Buchan? Buchnan? Ugh, I don't know! Anyways, he was on Cranford and... something else. Haha. Was the the person who was St. John on Jane Eyre or was that somebody else? Ugh, I always get him and some other guy confused... the one who was on Under the Greenwood Tree... sigh.
6. Justine Waddell! Okay, let's see.
The yucky Mansfield Park
Wives and Daughters
Great Expectations
Tess of the d'Urbervilles... which I have of course not seen...
7. Bzz, I can't remember his name. But let's see.
Wives and Daughters
Amazing Grace
Little Dorrit
Miss Potter
8. Carey Mulligan
Fake P&P
Bleak House
That is all I know. :P
9. Icky, this guy creeps me out for some reason... but he was on Persuasion and something else that I might think of later. :P Wait, was it Jane Eyre?
10. Julia McKenzie
Cranford, Return to Cranford
The Mystery of Edwin Drood (just watched that again the other day; I'd forgotten a lot of the plot! "The morning post is come. Ohhh the excitement.")
And proberly something else I can't remember either. :P Is she in that newer Miss Marple series?
I'll be back later if I think of anything else...
1. J.J. Field; The Railway Children, Northanger Abbey; and does Captain America count? :)
2. I can't recall her name, but I know she plays Mrs. Hale in North and South, as well as, I think, Emily's aunt in He Knew He Was Right...?
4. Again, don't know the actress's name, but she's Mrs. General in Little Dorrit.
5. Hmm... that's Jim from Cranford and Return to Cranford.
6. Justine Waddell; Wives and Daughters and Great Expectations
7. no actor name, sadly... I wish I knew; Wives and Daughters and I know another one, but I'm coming up blank on this! Dash it all!
8. Carey Mulligan; P&P'05, Bleak House, Northanger Abbey
10. I know she plays Mrs. Forester in Cranford and Return to Cranford.
Yes, "pop up" is the right term for it! Here are my guesses:
#1 J.J. Field- The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (2001), Northanger Abbey (2007)
#2 Lesley Manville- North and South (2005), Cranford (2007)
#3 David Suchet- I suppose Poiret is probably the one from '89 to 2013! Then The Way We Live Now....and I can't think of anything else.
#4 Pam Ferris- The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (2001), Little Dorrit (2008) The Turning of the Screw......
#5 ANDREW BUCHAN! You might say I'm a fan of his. :) Cranford (2007), Return to Cranford (2009)Jane Eyre (2006), Garrow's Law, and I don't know what year that's from.
#6 Justine Waddell- she's one of my favourites! Great Expectations (1999), Wives and Daughters (1999), Mansfield Park ('98 or '99), Tess of the D'Urbervilles
#7 Bill Paterson- Amazing Grace (2006), Wives and Daughters (1999), Miss Potter (2007), Little Dorrit (2008)
#8 Carey Mulligan- Pride and Prejudice (2005), Bleak House (2005), Northanger Abbey (2007)
#9 Samuel West- Persuasion (1995), Howard's End (1993), Horatio Hornblower: The Wrong War (1999)
#10 Julia McKenzie- Cranford (2007), Miss Marple (2008-2013)
Oh look, a lovely post with some of my lovely English friends. We've never met, but we bump into each other from time to time. Sometimes we have a nice long visit, and sometimes I simply cannot wait to see them again.
Hey Miss Laurie, I'm not going to compete in this game because the only two I know are J.J. Feild and Carey Mulligan; but I wanted to let you know that you've inspired me to do a black-and-white version of this game over at my blog, "Sunshine and Shadow"! Feel free to come over and play if you like! :-)
Thanks for all your work on these games! They're so much fun!! :-)
Love in Christ,
