A few years ago a period drama website I followed (which has since disappeared) hosted a Period Drama Challenge - watch a certain number of period dramas in a year and review each one. That challenge is what got me started reviewing films.
Now I'd like to issue a similar challenge to all of you! This Period Drama Challenge is given in the hopes that it will inspire you to not only watch new and interesting period films but also share a love for these films by reviewing them!
To Participate:
- Choose a number of period films to watch (see levels below).
- Leave me a comment to let me know you are going to participate and post on your blog or website that you're going to join in.
- Watch the number of films you choose between January 7th - July 7th, 2013.
- When you watch a period film review it on your blog or website.
- When you review a film leave a comment here with the link to your review.
- Each month I'll be posting links to the reviews posted during that month.
- Each month I'm also planning to post some tag questions for participants to answer just for fun.
How Many Period Dramas Will You Choose To Watch?
Choose a number of films from the list below. You can change the number of films you watch and review as you go along. You don't have to tell me which films you're going to watch and review - part of the fun is finding new things to watch. You can choose to re-watch a film you've seen before, but just make sure it's one you've never reviewed before. Pick however many films you think you can reasonably watch and review in six months.
Choose one of these amounts:
- 5 Films - Period Film Admirer
- 8 Films - Period Film Lover
- 10 Films - Period Film Devotee
- 12 to 15 Films - Period Film Fanatic
What Makes A Period Drama?
A television costume drama, big screen film or TV series set in a historical era. They could be adaptations of classic novels, based upon historically set books, stories of historical events or even biographical flicks. For what eras are eligible I'd say anything from Ancient times up to the 1940's (like World War II). Also eligible are films that travel back in time or start in one era and moves to another (such as Lost In Austen, From Time To Time, Somewhere In Time or The Love Letter).
Here's a list of historical eras to help you out:
- The Ancient Era (Biblical times, 4000 B.C.-476 A.D.)
- The Medieval Era (476-1450)
- The Renaissance Era (1450-1600) & Elizabethan Era (1558-1603)
- The Baroque Era (1600-1750)
- The Georgian/Colonial Era (1714-1811)
- The Regency Era (1812-1830, also known as the Jane Austen era)
- The Victorian Era (1837-1901)
- The Edwardian Era (1901-1919. and World War I)
- The 1920's
- The 1930's
- The 1940's (World War II films)
Having a hard time choosing something to watch? Check out my Period Films page and also this handy list with synopsis, trailers and links to reviews of each film.
What Should You Include In Your Reviews?
Firstly, the films you choose should preferably be family friendly, but if they do have questionable scenes please note this somewhere in your review. Other than that the style of review is up to you! Your review can be fairly short (one or two paragraphs) or ramble on at length - but, if you usually write very short reviews I encourage you to go into more detail. It's a good idea to talk about things like the music, scenery, story, actors, costumes & hairstyles. And if it's based on a book or historical era, you might mention how accurate it is to the book and time period. And don't forget to tell how much you liked or disliked it the film and whether you'd recommend it. Consider including film clips, quotes, photos or soundtrack clips in your review too. Overall, just have fun with them!

My plan is to watch and review 12-15, but we'll see how it goes.
I'm especially looking forward to watching an older BBC adaptation of Bleak House! :)
Sounds like something I'd absolutely love to do...but as a teen still living at home (not to mention keeping up with school) I'm afraid I can't this time. But I'll look forward to seeing all these reviews from everyone...it'll grow my to-see list! :) And btw...love the buttons.
Well, considering I don't have a life (unless I get a new job soon), I figure I can do at least one a week- which actually totals 26. However, I do know things happen, so I shall more realistically say 15-20, possibly more. And I can do all that just with my personal DVD collection, if I include every JA version I own. ;-P
Yes! That sounds like a great idea! I was already planning (New Year's resolution) to review more of the things I watch and now having a challenge to do it for and more people to share the reviews with will definitely help me. I think I'll manage to do between 8 and 10, though they'll mostly be miniseries, which take a bit longer to watch.
Ooh! Sounds like such fun!
I will be attempting 12 to 15 Films. And I'll be posting about this on my blog soon. I can't wait! :-)
Fun! I do believe I'm a Period Film Fanatic, buuut I'm not so much a fanatic of REVIEWING films, haha, so I think if I take the challenge I'll do less than that. ;)
I think I'd like to have a go at 12-15! :D
Do episodes of TV shows count? I'm thinking specifically of the Granada "Sherlock Holmes" series starring Jeremy Brett, but who knows what else I'll encounter in 6 months. Anyway, if episodes count, put me down as a Fanatic, but if not, I'll have to aim for Devotee instead.
Such fun!
This is going to be great fun! :)
I'm going to begin with 8 Period Films (Lover) ... but I may be able to go higher as time goes past. :)
Yay! I'm so excited that ya'll are interested! This is going to be fun!
Let's see...
Charity,
If you find you can join in you could even aim for 5 films. Hope you get to see Return To Cranford soon!
Rhoswen Faerie Wrose,
Yeah, 26 is probably a little much. It's good to pace yourself and focus more on enjoying writing reviews. JA films would be great but variety is the spice of life! ;)
birdienl,
Glad this is encouraging you to keep your New Year's resolution! Don't forget to leave the links to your reviews, I'd love to read them! :)
Miss Elizabeth,
Thanks ever so much for posting about this challenge on EofF!
Melody,
I think we're all Period Film Fanatics really. ;)
I hope you do take the challenge!
Jazzie,
Glad to have you join in! Your blog looks lovely! :)
Hamlette,
I'd say that reviewing some of the Granada Sherlock Holmes episodes would be great! I love those and even though they were aired as TV episodes they are more like TV films much like the Poirot or Miss Marple "episodes" are. I love Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes!
I had originally told myself that I wouldn't get involved in anymore challenges for this year. This isn't a reading challenge or craft one, plus after I get done reading some classic books for another challenge I had planned on watching the movies on based on the books. So this works out perfect! I will be doing the Period Film Fanatic.
I wish I could watch and review more, but I don't think I would be able to, so I'll settle for 8 films (Period Film Lover). I may decide to review more later on, but it depends. This sounds like so much fun!! :)
That sounds like fun! Except I don't have a website or blog.
Do you think I could enter through my google+ account?
I would love to join in, and I'm fairly certain I will watch enough period films to qualify, but I wouldn't be able to commit to the review part. I doubt I would have time. This year promises to be a very full, exciting year for our family! ;-)
I posted on my period drama blog that I am going to join in the Period Drama Challenge, but the blog address for my period drama blog has not been working recently (my posts will not appear for anyone who is following my blog), so I will share the link to my post here: http://perioddramaobsession.blogspot.com/2013/01/the-period-drama-challenge.html
I'm really sorry about this. :/ So far I have not been able to fix it. :(
oh, fun! I'm not the most fanatic period drama *reviewer*, so I'll try the period drama lover level and do eight. :)
Crafts4others,
I know, it's hard to resist a challenge! :) I enjoyed seeing your list of films in your blog post!
Banríon An Gheimhridh,
Glad to have you joining in! Your post came up in my feed so it must be working again, but thanks for the link the post. :)
Scullery Maid,
Do you think you'd be able to provide links to your reviews on your Google+ account?
I was thinking about setting up a blog where film reviews from the challenge can be posted for those who don't have a blog. Would that be helpful for you? Then you could send me the reviews via e-mail or I could even give you an author invite so you can post your reviews there. What do you think?
Jessica,
I heard from a little Melody bird recently that your year is definitely going to be getting busier! ;)
But if you do get a chance to leave comments about what period films you watch it would be fun to hear!
Hayden,
Glad to have you joining in!
What I said to Scullery Maid goes for anyone who is interested. If you don't have a blog I can set up a separate blog where your film reviews can be posted.
I'm in! :)
http://breadcrumbreads.wordpress.com/2013/01/10/a-period-drama-challenge/
Whoops, 'twould seem Blogger ate my last comment (you didn't get it by any chance, did you?) so I'll leave another. This looks like such fun! I think I'll try the Devotee level... now off to make a list!
http://my-eccentricitee.blogspot.com/2013/01/a-film-review-sense-sensibility-2008.html
My first review! Haha, I was going to do this review before I saw your challenge, but I put it off so it would count. I'll be trying to do the Film Fanatic level.
I assumed Les Misérables would count and luckily saw it on its UK opening day... long story short I have done my first review! :D http://clothesofthepast.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/les-miserables-beautiful.html
http://fhgcreations.weebly.com/hornblower-the-even-chance.html
Here is my first review!
http://fhgcreations.weebly.com/hornblower-the-examination-for-lieutenant.html
Here's my second review! :)
I am just learning about this challenge and decided to join in. I am going to watch 10 period dramas.
Here is another of my reviews:

Here's my first entry: http://hamlette.blogspot.com/2013/01/to-have-and-have-not-1944.html
Woo!
I've done my second review! :D http://clothesofthepast.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/the-young-victoria.html
This sounds like fun. I have a list of period dramas that I have not sat down and watched in detail lately. I will watch and review 8.
Beverly
I'm totally in! I'm totally a fanatic! I'm totally wondering if I will actually review that many....but we have lots of time. Woohoo!
This sounds great! I think I could manage 8 but I hope to watch more! I don't like writing reviews very much so they could be quite short. What if I lumped some together if they are similar? I do like to do that!
This comment is not to link any reviews, as I haven't made any yet. (I only made my blog recently) This is just to say I'd like to participate. I plan on watching at least 10. Thanks so much for hosting this! I can't wait to participate!
Here is my first review! http://themaddrose.blogspot.com/2013/01/a-review-of-sense-and-sensibility-1995.html

My 6th period film is Franco Zeffirelli's production of Romeo and Juliet.
http://www.collarcitybrownstone.com/2013/01/franco-zeffirellis-production-of-romeo.html
Awesome. Loved it!
Golly. Embarrassing. Accidentally replied to the wrong review. Now for the right one.... I read your Sense and Sensibility review, and I'm really looking forward to the challenge because your review persuaded me I need to give that version a try. Thanks!
Hello Miss Laurie, I was wondering: can I also include reviews for non-fiction? I've finished a review for Wartime Farm, a historical reality show by the BBC in which three people try to recreate the life on a farm during WWII.
It might not be 'period drama', but I think many people interested in period fiction can also enjoy this very much.
My 7th period drama is called About Mrs. Leslie.
http://www.collarcitybrownstone.com/2013/01/about-mrs-leslie.html
birdienl,
I'm sure that WWII film will be fine to review. Non-fiction is okay, especially if you think others might be interested in it. :)
My 8th period drama is The Bells of Saint Mary's.
http://www.collarcitybrownstone.com/2013/01/the-bells-of-saint-marys.html
Thank you Miss Laurie, a review for Wartime Farm will be coming up then. But my first review for this challenge is for The Paradise and you can find it here: http://birdienl.livejournal.com/78745.html
My 9th period drama is The Robe.
http://www.collarcitybrownstone.com/2013/01/the-robe.html
My 10th period drama is The Strange Affair of Uncle Harry. I reached my goal for the challenge but I am going to keep on going. I want to see how many I can watch by the deadline.
http://www.collarcitybrownstone.com/2013/02/the-strange-affair-of-uncle-harry.html
My 11th period drama is silent film Sadie Thompson.
http://www.collarcitybrownstone.com/2013/02/sadie-thompson.html

http://fhgcreations.weebly.com/emma-review.html
http://hopefulaspiringhomemaker.blogspot.com/2013/02/review-downton-abbey.html
I reviewed the third series of Downton Abbey. Not sure if it counts since it's not really a new period drama to me, but I'll submit it nevertheless.
http://elegance-of-fashion.blogspot.com/2013/02/review-downton-abbey-series-3-2012.html
This is my 3rd Review out of... ten, I believe. It's on Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey (2007):
http://themaddrose.blogspot.com/2013/02/a-review-of-northanger-abbey-2007.html
I've done my third review! it's another movie-musical but seeing as it's set in the 1870s I thought it would count :D
http://clothesofthepast.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/the-phantom-of-opera.html
Period drama #22 is The Grapes of Wrath.
http://www.collarcitybrownstone.com/2013/02/the-grapes-of-wrath.html
Just wanted to let you know I've posted two reviews for the PDC in February so far:
Bert and Dickie/The best of men (which are actually two movies, but I made 1 review of them)
http://birdienl.livejournal.com/81043.html
Wartime Farm:
http://birdienl.livejournal.com/80238.html
This year I have been more addicted to period dramas than usual (it could be influenced by Downton).
I have watched Pride and Prejudice (1995 version), Bleak House (2005), and Tess of D'Ubervilles (2008). I am about to watch Parades End on HBO this week and then have Little Dorrit (2008), North and South (2004), Wives and Daughters (1999), Sense and Sensibility (2005, BBC), amongst others in my online libraries and DVDs ready. Since I am losing sleep and watching so many of them, maybe I could participate in this.
(Yes I have kids, a full time job, etc...I just seem to be losing sleep to watch everything :)
Here's my second Pallisers review!

Miss Laurie,
I very much regret to say I have to 'downsize' to a different category. I've been having computer problems and since I watch pretty much everything on my computer, it has put a serious kink in my watching schedule. I'm going with Period Film Admirer and will do my best to post five reviews this month.
Sigh. I was really hoping to be able to see and review 12-15 films... but Life decided otherwise. :)

My Review for The Inheritance

This sounds like so much fun. Films inspire a lot of creativity in me, but I typically don't do extensive reviews, I'll just comment here and there. I'll take a movie and create something and perhaps highlight the positives while weaving a few threads of Grace into it.
LOVE your idea. Must visit again soon to read some more.

Miss Laurie, thank you for hosting this challenge and I'm sorry I have to drop out. I hope the rest of you have fun!!!

I will hopefully be able to do this. I am a bit behind on reviews from last year still, but I hope I will be able to do this soon! Maybe I should do this year's reviews first.
I am also reading a lot of classics written by women this year, and will hopefully do some reviews soon, if anyone is interested, keep an eye on my blog :)
