Praise To The Lord, The Almighty!

small beauty

I love the words of praise and beautiful melody of this old hymn. As you go to church and worship our wonderful Lord, may His praises resonate in you heart today! I've included a the most commonly sung verses below.
1) Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near;
Praise Him in glad adoration.

2) Praise to the Lord, who over all things so wondrously reigneth,
Shelters thee under His wings, yea, so gently sustaineth!
Hast thou not seen how thy desires ever have been
Granted in what He ordaineth?

4) Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;
Surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee.
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do,
If with His love He befriend thee.

7)Praise to the Lord, O let all that is in me adore Him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him.
Let the Amen sound from His people again,
Gladly for aye we adore Him.

Words: Joachim Neander, in A und Ω Glaub- und Liebesübung (Straslund: 1680); translated from German to English by Catherine Winkworth, 1863.

Music: Lobe den Herren, Ander Theil des Erneuerten Gesangbuch, second edition (Bremen, Germany: 1665); harmony by William S. Bennett, 1864

Here's two YouTube videos of the song. The first one is sung in harmony all by one man.

This second video is just one man playing the piano. I like listening to the music and reading the lyrics.

Thanks for posting Joachim Neander's great hymn. I hope when you talk about things that are old fashioned that, at least in this case, you don't mean out of fashion. His hymn is still being sung, even though Mr. Neander died 330 years ago today. (He also holds the distinction of being the only hymn writer I know who had a fossil named after him!)

If you enjoy reading about our hymns and their authors, I invite you to check out my daily blog on the subject, Wordwise Hymns.
