When They Were Young Quiz

Eight Bonus Points: Who is this old time actress?
There are so many great actors in period dramas and many of the best have been acting since they were very young. In this quiz we'll be focusing on a few of those very talented actors and actresses who have spent many years portraying literary characters on TV and in film.

To Play: Look at the photos of period drama actors when they were young and try to guess the actor's name and at least one period drama character they have portrayed. Leave your answers in a comment and I'll respond with your score. Guess as many times as you wish. Answers for this quiz will be posted next Saturday.

Scoring: Five points will be awarded for each correctly guessed actor's name. Two more points can be earned by naming at least one character the actor has portrayed in a period drama (name as many as you can but only two points will be awarded). Eight bonus points can be earned by guessing which old time actress is shown in the photo at the top of this post. A total score of 120 points can be earned.

Oh, wow, this is going to be a hard one! The top picture is Julie Andrews, a publicity still from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. As to the others...

1. Is it Alun Armstrong? He's been Jeremiah Flintwinch, Inspector Bucket, Monsieur Thenardier, Daniel Peggotty... shall I go on? :P
2. She looks a little bit like Carey Mulligan today, and there's something familiar about her face but I can't think who it is.
3. Colin Firth? Mr. Darcy!
4. Definitely Emma Thompson, Elinor Dashwood.
5. HA! Charles Dance, Mr. Tulkinghorn.
6. ?
7. Oh, dear, I'm thinking this might be Anthony Andrews, but I'm not sure... and I SHOULD be sure. Haha. Okay, I'm going to guess it's him, and of course he was The Scarlet Pimpernel.
8. Hahahaha! Imelda Staunton, Miss Pole.
9. Barbara Flynn, Miss Browning (wow, she looks so different here!)
10. *hysterical laughter* Jonny Lee Miller, Mr. Knightley. (Wow. He does NOT look like Mr. Knightley here. *snickers again*)
11. ?
12. Ugh, wish I could rememember the actor's name... but I'm quite sure this is Sir Leicester Dedlock.
13. ? She looks SO familiar...
14. Is this Kenneth Branagh? Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing.
15. OOOH I think this is Brendan Coyle, Nicholas Higgins!
16. Francesca Annis, Mrs. Hyacinth Gibson (her hair! Ha!)

That was such fun! I may be back to guess again...

Wow! What an interesting game! I only think I know a few of these... I really should see more period drama films! :)

#1 Is that the man who played the old servant "Flyntwinch" in Little Dorrit?
#2...

Oh dear. I was just looking at the picture of #2 and had my mouse hovering on it, and then at the bottom of my internet browser (internet explorer) it showed the name of the image, and the actor's name is on the end of the image name. It's like that for all of them!
So I can't play now, because I can see who everybody is. Rats. I did know a couple of these already (but WOW, some of them I'd never have guessed... Colin Firth? Jonny Lee Miller? They look so different!!)

I've got an idea! If you save the images in your computer and rename them as "image1, image2," or something like that, and re-upload them into the post, that would erase this problem. :)

Anyway, I hope the rest of the players have fun guessing and don't figure out how to see the answers like I did! :P

I love your blog, it's so much fun to read!

Blessings,
Julia

1. Is this Alun Armstrong? Looks like his nose. :P So, character for him would be Jeremiah Flintwinch. And tons of other Dickens characters. ;D
2. I really don't know... maybe Judi Dench?
3. Ha, I think that's Colin Firth. (Mr. Darcy)
4. Okay, that's Emma Thompson. :) (Elinor Dashwood)
6. Hmmm... is that Jane Seymour? And if it is, I shall say... Bella Wilfer on a version of Our Mutual Friend that I've never seen. Heehee. Have you seen that, by the bye?
8. Maybe Imelda Staunton? (Miss Pole and Mrs. Palmer... I can't really say one without the other. :P Okay, I can; I'm just being silly.)
9. Ooh, is that what's-her-name? Barbara something... Flynn? o.O Anyway, if it's who I'm thinking of, she was Mrs. Potter on Miss Potter (and I've seen her in 4 other roles... heehee.)
10. Yikes, is that Jonny Lee Miller? (Mr. Knightley)
14. It's Michael Gambon! :) (Mr. Woodhouse)
16. Francesca Annis (Mrs. Gibson on Wives and Daughters)

I'm sure I'm missing some I should know... haha.

And the picture at the top keeps making me think of Julie Andrews. I don't suppose it is?

Miss Dashwood,
Your guess for the bonus photo was perfectly perfectly right, even down to what it's from!

Your guesses for #1, #3, #4, #5, #7, #8, #9, #10, #15 and #16 were completely correct! You also guessed the correct character for #12 so you'll get points for that.
Your guess for #14 was not correct and you'll laugh when you hear who it is! And #2 yes it does look a bit like Carey Mulligan but of course it isn't her, you might be able to get it if you think about it a bit.
Your current score is 80 points!

If you have any guesses for #2, #6, #11, #13, #14 or the actor's name on #12 feel free to leave another comment. :)

Miss Laurie of Old-Fashioned Charm said...

Julia,
You did get the character on #1 correct. I changed all of the photo names and re-uploaded them, sorry about that!
If you'd still like to play you could just name off period drama characters that each actor had played and get points that way.

Miss Laurie of Old-Fashioned Charm said...

Melody,
So many times your wild guesses often hit the mark!
Your guesses on #1, #2 (no characters mentioned), #3, #4, #6, #8, #9, #10, #14 and #16 were correct as well as a correct guess for the bonus photo!!! Wowee! Very good!
Your current score is 78 points!

Care to try some other wild guesses at #5, #7, #11, #12, #13 or #15? Oh and mentioning a character played by #2 will give extra points! :)

Miss Laurie of Old-Fashioned Charm said...

Livia Rachelle,
Your guess for the bonus photo was correct.
Your guesses for #3, #4, #6, #7 and #10 were completely correct. Your guesses on characters for #9, #15 and #16 were correct as was your guess for character on #8 but I had to look up the Harry Potter reference because I don't watch those films.
Your guess on #1 was completely off, sorry.
Your current score is 33 points!

If you have any more guesses feel free to comment again! :)

Okay, here I am again. :)

2. Well, she played Miss Matty on Cranford. I always consider that to be Her Role. Heehee.
5. Well... he LOOKS rather like Charles Dance aka Mr. Tulkinghorn... so hey, I'll guess that. :P
12. And this fellow looks rather like Sir Leicester Dedlock, Bart., from Bleak House to me....
15. And when I see him, I think of Nicholas Higgins from N&S, but I can't remember the actor's name at the moment... humbug...
And I think that's it. Wait, 7 isn't Anthony Andrews, is it? If it's not it looks sort of like him, but I'm hoping the Leaguettes won't be after me if I get that wrong. :P

Well, we'll see how this goes... I'm not always that good with the faces. :)

Is the picture Julie Andrews? It looks an awful lot like her.

1. I want to say Alan A-something-or-other. Armstrong? He plays Inspector Bucket in Bleak House and Jeremiah Flintwinch in Little Dorrit.

3. Pretty sure that's Colin Firth. He's THE Mr. Darcy in P&P '95 and Mr. Brown in Nanny McPhee.

4. Emma Thompson. Without a doubt. Elinor from S&S, and also from Nanny McPhee, playing Nanny McPhee.

5. Charles Dance. Mr. Tulkinghorn in Bleak House and Ralph Nickleby in a Nicholas Nickleby adaption. 2002, I believe?

8. Hmm... Imelda Staunton? Not sure if I got her last name right. She's the infamous Miss Pole in Cranford and Mrs. Palmer in S&S.

9. Ooh! I recognize her! She's Mrs. Jamieson in Cranford and Miss Browning in Wives and Daughters! Is her name Barbara Flynn?

I'm recognizing a few of the others, but I can't recall any more names. Oh, well... but what a fun game! Thanks for posting!! :)
