A Special Valentine's Card For You!

Well hello there my dearest blogging friends!
It has been a while since I've sent you a personal message and I am very sorry for that. My days lately have been filled with caring for Gram, keeping a squeaky clean house, testing out new recipes, teaching myself to knit and learning many lessons that the Lord has for me along the way!

Well, it's Valentine's Day again (in case you hadn't heard) and I've been racking my brain on what I could send y'all to brighten your day.

I could send you a vintage Valentine's card from a long ago era!
But since I didn't remember to send them out soon enough, they wouldn't get to you in time.

I could send you an exquisite bouquet of roses!
But "full many a flower is born to bloom and waste it's fragrance on the desert air..." (a.k.a. they don't last very long). Roses are gorgeous but also expensive. :(

I could make you some delectable and adorable Valentine's cookies!
But then I'd probably ruin your New Year's resolutions, the same goes for chocolates.

I could sing you a song of enduring love and sweet romance!
"Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip...!" (sorry, Gram and I enjoy watching Gilligan's Island.)

"‘Twas a still calm night and the moon’s pale light shone over hill and dale
Her cheeks that once glowed in the rose tint of health
by the hand of disease had turned pale

Oh Lily, sweet Lily
Dear Lily Lyle
And the wild rose blossoms on her little green grave
‘Neath the trees in the flowery vale"

Oh, sorry, that's The Tragical Ballad of Lily Lyle. Hardly the kind of romantic song you were probably expecting.

Sorry, I can't think of anything sweet and romantic! And you really don't want to hear me sing a solo anyway...

I know! I'll give you Mr. Darcy with flowers!

Oops! That's not the right one! Hardly the real Mr. Darcy!

Okay, okay, I've had my fun and showed off some of the gorgeous photos I've found recently. So now it's time to get down to the stack of Valentine's cards that have come in expressly for you (as designed my yours truly)!

But first a Valentine's Day card made by Mr. Collins!
(What!?!?!?!?)

Now here are some words from some real gentlemen!

A very Happy Valentine's Day to you my dear friends! I hope this post makes you smile and feel as extra special as you certainly are!

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16

P.S. Some of the Austen Hero Valentine's above have quotes that come from the movies and not the books, and some mix movies quotes too. Feel free to share these Valentine's with friends but make sure to keep my blog address on them. Thanks!

News: The Christmas Candle (2013)

I found news about this movie on Facebook recently and was immediately intruiged by the story, cast and time period. It's also based on a story by Christian author Max Lucado so faith in God will be a big theme.

This movie looks like a really good family holiday film and it's coming to select cinemas in the USA November 22nd!

Story:
"From bestselling author, Max Lucado, comes THE CHRISTMAS CANDLE, a timeless holiday film for the entire family.
Deep in the heart of the English countryside lies the enchanting village of Gladbury. Legend has it every 25 years an angel visits the village candlemaker and touches a single candle. Whoever lights this candle receives a miracle on Christmas Eve. But in 1890, at the dawn of the electric age, this centuries old legend may come to an end.
When David Richmond (Hans Matheson), a progressive young minister, arrives in Gladbury, the villagers discover a new formula for miracles: good deeds and acts of kindness. While David's quest to modernize Gladbury sets him at odds with the old world candlemaker, he finds an unlikely ally in the lovely skeptic, Emily Barstow (Samantha Barks). Now, the fiery candlemaker must fight to preserve the legacy of the Christmas Candle. But when the candle goes missing, the miraculous and human collide in the most astonishing Christmas the village of Gladbury has ever seen." - from Official Website

Official Trailer:

Cast:
There's several period drama actors in The Christmas Candle that I'm excited to see in these type of roles!

Hans Matheson as David Richmond
Period Dramas: Poldark (1996), Les Miserables (1998 as Marius), Doctor Zhivago (2002), The Tudors (TV series, not recommended), Tess of the D'Urbervilles (2008, as Alec D'Urberville), Sherlock Holmes (2009).
Thoughts: His past period drama characters have been creepy sometimes so it will be nice to seem him play a minister in this film.

Samantha Barks as Emily Barstow
Period Dramas: Les Miserables 25th Anniversary Concert, Les Miserables (2012 as Eponine).
Thoughts: So excited to see Samantha in another film and another period drama role! She looks so pretty in the 1800's costumes! It really makes me wonder if there might be some singing in this film.

Lesley Manville as Bea Haddington
Period Dramas: David Copperfield (2000), North & South (2004, as Mrs. Hale), Poirot (TV series), Cranford (2007, Mrs. Rose),
Thoughts: Always enjoy her performances and happy to see her in another period drama role!

Sylvester McCoy as Edward Haddington
Period Dramas: The Hobbit (as Radagast), Doctor Who (1987-1989, seventh Doctor)
Thoughts: He made a very quirky Doctor and an interesting wizard, it's neat to see him in Victorian garb.

James Cosmo as Herbert Hopewell
Period Dramas: Emma (1996, Mr. Weston), Merlin (TV series), The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (as Father Christmas), Ivanhoe (1997), Braveheart, The House of Eliott (TV series).
Thoughts: He's a big Scottish bloke and it's actually kinda funny to me seeing him in period costume. His character looks like a businessman.

Susan Boyle as Eleanor Hopewell
Period Dramas: Her film debut!
Thoughts: This looks like it will be a wonderful role for her film debut, she looks great in period costume! Now I'm really wondering if there might be some singing in this film!

Barbara Flynn as Lady Camdon
Period Dramas: Cranford (Mrs. Jamieson), Miss Potter, He Knew He Was Right, Poirot, Horatio Hornblower, The Forsyte Saga, Lorna Doone, Wives & Daughters, The Barchester Chronicles.
Thoughts: A period film wouldn't be a period film without her! So glad to see her in yet another lovely role!

John Hannah as William Barstow
Period Dramas: Poirot (TV series), Miss Marple (TV series), The Mummy movies,.
Thoughts: He's Scottish and I always enjoy seeing him pop up from time to time in films.

Does The Christmas Candle (2013) look interesting?

Does having Susan Boyle and Samantha Barks in this film say singing to you?

Musical: Into The Woods (1991)

When one of my co-workers mentioned this was his favorite musical my interest was immediately piqued. Finding this 1991 filmed stage version on Netflix I started to watch with fairly low expectations but soon found that it was much more entertaining than I could have thought!

Into The Woods is a cleverly written musical that intertwines the stories of several fairytale characters into a hilariously fun but twisted story. Now the songs are stuck in my head and it's definitely one of my favorite musicals too.

This review is particularly about the 1991 film recording of the of the Original Broadway Cast but since many of you probably haven't heard of this musical it will focus on the musical in general. I also have a few words to say about casting news for an exciting new movie version planned for 2014.

The Witch visits the Baker and His Wife.
Story: A baker and his wife journey into the woods in search of a cow, a red cape, a pair of golden slippers and hair the color of corn to lift a curse that has kept them childless. In the woods they meet up with characters from Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack and the Beanstalk. Each character wishes for something but soon finds that their wishes coming true might not be what they really wanted.

Cinderella sings about Prince Charming.
Costumes: In this production the costumes are very fairytale-like, a mixture of Medieval through to Victorian styles. Cinderella and her stepsisters have some lovely dresses. My favorite costume was actually the dress that the Baker's Wife wears, it has lovely flow to it and I like her hat/hairpiece. Costume changes by a few of the characters were very quickly accomplished. There are a few quite low cut gowns on a few of the ladies but nothing too bad.

Jack, his mother, magic harp and Milky White.
Sets: They suggest the fairytale setting very simply but are easily moved and changed. The props were also simple and easily moved, even the cow was easy to run away with! Hehe :)

Rapunzel's Prince.
Music: Lyrics and music were composed by Stephen Sondheim (lyrics for West Side Story, lyrics for GypsyA Little Night Music, and Sweeney Todd) in 1987. In 1988 it won a Tony Award for Best Musical Score. Most of the music is light and fun but there are some sweeter and more serious songs toward the end of the musical. There are some hilariously funny lines spoken and sung. The tunes themselves get stuck in your head and it's hard to get them out. :)

Cinderella's happily ever after.
Favorite Songs: At first I didn't like all of the songs but now I have so many favorites! Here's a bit about some of the best...

"Hello Little Girl" - The wolf delays Little Red Riding Hood on her way to grandmother's house and fantasizes about eating her. Red is such a funny character, probably my favorite!
*Watch Song On YouTube

"Hello, little girl, What's your rush? You're missing all the flowers. The sun won't set for hours, Take your time."

"A Very Nice Prince" - In the woods Cinderella meets the Baker's Wife and tells her about attending the balls at the King's Festival and about meeting the Prince.
*Watch Song On YouTube

-He has charm for a Prince, I guess...
~Guess?
-I don't meet a wide range.

"Giants In The Sky" - This is probably my favorite song now! Jack tells about climbing the beanstalk and meeting giants. A fairly simple melody but a strong voice is needed to do the song justice!
*Watch Song On YouTube

"A big tall terrible Giant at the door, A big tall terrible lady Giant sweeping the floor."

"Agony" - Brother princes meet in the woods and talk about the frustrations of wooing Cinderella and Rapunzel. Definitely quite hilarious!
*Watch Song On YouTube

-Am I not sensitive, Clever, Well-mannered, Considerate, Passionate, Charming, As kind as I'm handsome And heir to a throne?
~You are everything maidens could wish for!
-Then why no-?
~Do I know?
-The girl must be mad!

"It Takes Two" - A very sweet song sung by the Bake and his Wife as they finally decide to work together to get the items the Witch demands.
*Watch Song On YouTube

"You've changed. You're daring. You're different in the woods. More sure. More sharing. You're getting us through the woods. If you could see- You're not the man who started, And much more openhearted Than I knew You to be."

Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf.
Characters:

  • Tom Aldredge as The Narrator - He starts out the story with the ever famous words "One Upon A Time" and helps move the story along. There is a hilarious moment when the story characters realize he's there and take him captive! "Some of us don't like the way you've been telling it." Yes, the story does get a bit crazy!
  • Bernadette Peters as The Witch - One of the main characters, the Witch appears all evil but there is more to her than first meets the eye (literally!). Bernadette Peters adds so much to the Witch including amazing humor, and makes her one of my favorite characters. Her voice is quite amazing too, "Last Midnight" is just amazing! "A giant, a giant's just like us only bigger. Much much bigger. So big!"
  • Chip Zien as The Baker - He's sort of the moral compass of the story, always doing what is right even though he'd really like to steal the items he needs. He does have some funny moments but overall is very sweet. Chip Zien's voice is very smooth and perfect for the character.
  • Joanna Gleason as The Baker's Wife - An interesting character who does have quite a few humorous lines. Joanna Gleason is perfect in the role, such light and movement, warmth and smarts. Her voice is strong and blends perfectly with each character she sings with. It's no wonder she won a Tony award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical  for this role!
  • Kim Crosby as Cinderella - The perfect fairytale heroine she is sweetness itself, talks to birds, has her wishes granted and cares for everyone. In an interesting twist she attends a series of balls at the King's festival and though she dances with the Prince each time she runs away from him uncertain whether she really wants to be pursued by him. Kim Crosby's voice is gorgeous and she's usually quite graceful but she does have amazingly funny pray falls that get the audience giggling at her.
  • Danielle Ferland as Little Red Riding Hood - Probably my favorite character from Into The Woods! Red is greedy and comically stuffs her face at every chance, she is also very matter-of-fact and says whatever comes to mind whether it's nice or not! "You can talk to birds?!?" Danielle Ferland was amazing in this role, her song "I Know Things Now" is pure genius!
  • Ben Wright as Jack - Young and devoted to his mother and his cow but easily led astray. Played by an older actor but he captures the youthfulness of the character.
  • Barbara Bryne as Jack's Mother - Very concerned about providing for herself and her son, she sends Jack through the woods and on to the market to sell their cow Milky White. Although she's slightly annoying she also has her funny moments brought to life amazingly by Barbara Bryne.
  • Robert Westenberg as The Wolf - A bit creepy and very greedy but he too has his funny moments. Only one song but long enough for us to realize that the guy under the wolf suit also plays Cinderella's Prince, a similarly greedy character. The costume they have him wear is a bit odd.
  • Tom Aldredge as The Mysterious Man - With his funny introductions and mysterious appearances he helps the story along but without making much sense until toward the end of the first act.
  • Robert Westenberg as Cinderella's Prince - "I was raised to be charming, not sincere." This quote just about sums up both princes. He is bold in his pursuit of the maiden and rescuing her but not very heroic when it comes to his kingdom. Robert's voice is very rich and suits the character perfectly. An interesting fact is that in real life the Cinderella and Prince Charming characters met and married through this production!
  • Pamela Winslow as Rapunzel - Very young and a little dim witted. She sings constantly and isn't very interesting although her story is made interesting by being part of the Witch's story. Her screeching scenes toward the end of the production is pretty funny.
  • Chuck Wagner as Rapunzel's Prince - I rather like him more than Cinderella's Prince but his character is very similar. The duets he does with his brother prince are brilliantly done and some of my favorite songs! "Dwarfs are very upsetting!"
  • Lauren Mitchell & Kay McClelland as Lucinda & Florinda - Cinderella's stepsisters who are both very mean and have endings they deserve. Small characters but well done.
  • Edmund Lyndeck as Cinderella's Father - Another small part but he's a bit like a Mr. Bennet character and has a few witty lines.
  • Joy Franz as Cinderella's Stepmother - A very mean character she leads her daughter is absurdities to try to get the Prince's attention. The way Joy Franz speaks sometimes was odd but she did a good job.
  • Merle Louise as Red's Grandmother & Cinderella's Mother - Small parts but necessary to the story.
  • Philip Hoffman as King's Steward - Another small part but he moves the story along helping with the search for Cinderella and has a few funny lines.

Rapunzel in the tower.
My Recommendation: This production is fairly family friendly. There are a couple low cut gowns worn by a few of the ladies, the Witch's curse on the Baker is a physical one so he acts like she's struck him between the legs a couple times. The after happily ever after second act gets very tangled up and includes a bit of adulterous behavior that doesn't get graphic here and there's also some death. I don't altogether like the mess that's made of the fairytales but it is interesting and cleverly done. "This is ridiculous, What am I doing here? I'm in the wrong story!"
The ending songs make up for all the messes and the cast is given a well deserved standing ovation. I highly recommend Into The Woods (1991) if you love musicals and fairytales like I do.

Into The Woods (2014) - A film adaptation of Into The Woods has been in the works for quite a while now and it seems close to being made and released! It seems Disney may have a hand in the production and that James Lapine who wrote the original story/book has written the screenplay for it but there's rumors that some of the characters have been cut. There's a lot of rumors going around about cast but here's what IMDb is currently listing and I like them very much in the roles! James Corden as The Baker, Emily Blunt as The Baker's Wife, Meryl Streep as The Witch, Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Chris Pine as Cinderella's Prince, Johnny Depp as The Wolf, Daniel Huddlestone as Jack (Gavroche!!!!), Christine Baranski as Cinderella's Stepmother, Lucy Punch as Lucinda, Tammy Blanchard as Florinda, Mackenzie Mauzy as Rapunzel, Billy Magnussen as Rapunzel's Prince, Tracey Ullman as Jack Mother and Sophia Grace Brownlee as Little Red Riding Hood. Traditionally the roles of Jack and Red have been played by older actors so having actual children in those roles could be great, especially having Gavroche in another film! Meryl Streep will make a great Witch but I'll miss the original Witch Bernadette Peters. James Corden could be hilarious as could Emily Blunt and Johnny Depp. Anna Kendrick will be a perfect Cinderella! Looking forward to more news about this film!

"Wishes may bring problems,
Such that you regret them.
Better that, though,
Than to never get them..."

Have you heard of Into The Woods or ever seen this or another stage production of it?

Did you watch the film clips? Which was your favorite?

Immutability

One of the neat things about working for a Christian ministry is starting our work days out with a devotional and prayer time. My co-workers have taken turns giving devotionals on the Attributes of God and a couple weeks ago it was my turn. The Lord brought to my mind the interesting subject of His immutability and I'd like to share a bit of what I talked about with my co-workers.

Attribute of God: Immutability

Definition of Attribute: Not capable of or susceptible to change. Unchanging, constant.

Bible Verses:

Psalm 90:2 "Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God."
God is the same as He was before He created the world.

Malachi 3:6 "For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed."
These words from God's mouth, He is Lord and does not change. Because He does not change we are not consumed but sustained.

II Timothy 2:13 "If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself."
God does not change even if we don't believe in Him. He is the source of absolute truth and is not dependent on people believing in Him.

James 1:17 "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning."
There is no fickleness in God or even the shadow or inkling that He will ever change.

Hebrews 13:8 "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever."
God the Lord Jesus is never changing, I can trust Him as much today as I did yesterday and trust Him as much tomorrow as I am today.

Why I chose this attribute and why it's important to me:

  • Life is so crazy, mixed up and ever changing for the bad. People change their minds all the time, what they say one moment they will just as easily change their minds on the next moment. God is different. God is the one unchanging, stable thing in this world. He stands firm in the test of time and does in fact uphold all things.
  • Because God does not change this means that His attributes will never change. He is always going to be loving, good, merciful, everywhere present, all knowing, all powerful, all sufficient. His promises will never change either because He will not change His mind.
  • Because God does not change I can completely put my trust in Him every day. I can cling to Him and know that He will always stand firm although my world is spinning out of control.
  • Although God does not change He is changing me to become more like His Son, Jesus Christ. He takes me as I am but He doesn't leave me as I am. 1 John 3:2 "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is."
  • God does not change but as we learn more about Him through reading the Bible our view of Him will change and become more rounded.

"Consider what thou owest to His immutability. Though thou hast changed a thousand times, He has not changed once; though thou hast shifted thy intentions, and thy will, yet He has not once swerved from His eternal purpose, but has still held thee fast." - Charles Haddon Spurgeon, 1856

"Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift and the cables strain,
Will your anchor drift, or firm remain?

We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love."
- We Have An Anchor, Priscilla J. Owens, 1882

Easter Contemplations

I'm not sure if it's just because Easter falls so early in this year, or that I've been so busy lately but this Easter took me by surprise at how fast it was approaching. Of myself I haven't had time to consider Easter or the story of Christ's Resurrection but reflecting on this past week there's several thoughts on Ester that the Lord has given me (from chapels, Bible studies and songs) that I'd like to share with y'all.

Romans 11:22
For the last two weeks my pastor has been teaching on Wednesday night Prayer Meeting about the Goodness and Severity (or Judgement) of God. He mentioned how a lot of people only want God to be a kindly grandfather in Heaven who continually gives good gifts. Other people only see God as severe, a grumpy old man sitting high in Heaven judging them. The truth is that God is both Good and Severe / Just. His Holy nature is so far above our sinful natures that He must Judge us fairly to be guilty, but God is so Good that He created a way for us to come to Him. He sent His only son Jesus Christ, who was both Holy God and a Perfect Man, to take the punishment for all of our sin by dying a cruel death on a cross like a common thief! This is what Good Friday is all about, Christ's death was because of our sin, his death was for us!
Friday one of my co-workers mentioned Romans 11:22 in devotional time and the Lord brought this thought to my mind: When Jesus died on the cross God showed both His Severity and His Goodness - His Severity was poured out on Jesus Christ so that His Goodness could be shown toward us!
If you've grown up in church like me this concept is not a new one but the connection of this verse to the Easter message had never occurred to me before. It's almost an unbelievable thought that a Holy, all-powerful Creator God could give such a good gift to sinners who have rejected Him, but this just shows how much God loves us!

Smitten, Stricken and Afflicted - hymn sung by Fernando Ortega
My sister got Fernando Ortega's hymns CD Beginnings for her birthday and I've enjoyed listening to the peaceful arrangements of classic hymns played on piano, violin and guitar. The hymn Smitten, Stricken and Afflicted really stuck out to me because the words tell of Jesus Christ's death on the cross and in particular the depth of pain he received when dying for us. He was indeed rejected, groaning, disowned, insulted, wounded and pierced and as the hymn says "Was there ever grief like His?"
But what was it all for? In verse four the hymn explains: "Lamb of God for sinners wounded! Sacrifice to cancel guilt!"

The hymn also issues a warning to unbelievers (just as Romans 11:22 does):
Ye who think of sin but lightly,
Nor suppose the evil great,
Here may view its nature rightly,
Here its guilt may estimate.
Mark the Sacrifice appointed!
See Who bears the awful load!
’Tis the Word, the Lord’s Anointed,
Son of Man, and Son of God.

It's All About The Resurrection
In all this talk about Christ's sacrifice and death it's very important to remember the real reason we celebrate Easter. Yes Jesus Christ did die but three days later he came alive again and rose from the dead! I was reminded of this in chapel at work this week when a writer for AiG spoke about the Infallible Proofs we have for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ (you can read his interesting series of blog articles about the Resurrection here). He mentioned that whenever the gospel is preached by the apostles the Resurrection is the focal point of their message.

Paul goes on to say in 1 Corinthians 15:13-14 - "But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain."
The good news is that Jesus Christ did indeed rise from the dead, he was seen by those who knew him after he rose and later his disciples saw him ascend to Heaven where he lives to make intercession for us!

Because he lives we can have forgiveness of sins, eternal life in Heaven and live each day in God's power!

Though we are dead in our sins our spirits can be made alive by believing in Jesus Christ's death, burial and resurrection. This is the real reason why we celebrate. This is why Easter should be an even bigger holiday for us as believers than Thanksgiving and even Christmas. At Christmas we celebrate Christ's coming but at Easter we celebrate Christ Jesus fulfilling the purpose for which he came: to bring us life!

Christ, the Lord, is risen today, Alleluia!
Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!
Sing, ye heavens, and earth, reply, Alleluia!
-Christ the Lord is Risen Today, words by Charles Wesley

If you have never believed on Christ's death and resurrection and trusted him to take the punishment for your sins I pray that you will do that today. If you have any questions I would love to introduce you to my Jesus and help you know him as I do.

If you have believed in Christ Jesus as your savior I have the honor of calling you my sister (or brother) in Christ! I pray that you have a blessed Resurrection Sunday dwelling in the goodness of God!

Happy Easter!

What are your Easter plans?

How long have you known Christ Jesus as your Savior?

There's a sad sort of clanging

An absurd little bird
Is popping out to say coo-coo

Or are you really as

Song #11
Still, Half a Sixpence
Is better than half a penny
Is better than half a farthing

Touch it everyday
And, though, that Half a Sixpence
Can only mean half a romance
Remember that half a romance
Is better than none

And the harmony sounds
And the melody rolls around
"Prest-o Change-o!"
We're Ten Feet Off the Ground
And when the rhythm pounds
And the harmony sounds
And the melody rolls around
Right from the down beat,
We can be found
Ten Feet Off the Ground

Answer: Ten Feet Off The Ground from The One And Only Genuine Family Band

Note: I've only seen this once and while it's excellent I always forget this song is in that film because I grew up hearing Michael Fienstein singing on his children's album Pure Imagination.
